Police used tear gas and water cannons on protesters in Santiago, on Friday, as they marked the two-year anniversary of the start of anti-government demonstrations which resulted in the ongoing drafting of a new constitution.

Large numbers of protesters could be seen celebrating around bonfires before police in riot gear arrived with crowd control vehicles, using water cannons and tear gas.

The protesters were marking the two-year anniversary of the start of anti-government demonstrations, which began in early October of 2019, but escalated on 18 October. The movement, which denounced corruption, social inequality, and the rise of the cost of living, was sparked by an increase in public transport fares.

In November 2019, the government agreed to hold a referendum to write a new constitution, which was approved with 78 percent of the votes in October 2020. Some 155 Chileans were elected to form a constitutional assembly in May 2021 and began drafting the new constitution in July.
