A British diplomat has been hailed a hero in China after saving a drowning student.

Stephen Ellison was walking by a river when a woman slipped into the deep water.

Footage shows her struggling to stay afloat in the fast-moving current.

The consul-general in Chongqing removed his shoes and dived in to help.

He can be seen dragging her to a lifebuoy thrown from the riverbank.

It’s understood the woman quickly recovered her breathing and consciousness.
