Biden pushes for paid leave for employees to get COVID jab, urges states for $100 vaccine incentive

US President Joe Biden announced new incentives for Americans to get their COVID-19 vaccine, including pushing employers to give a paid leave day for employees to get their jab and a $100 incentive (€84), speaking from the White House, in Washington DC, on Thursday.

The President stressed the importance of vaccinations as the ‘best defence’ against the coronavirus, especially with the rapid increase of Delta variant cases.

Biden said that the fact that over 99 percent of COVID-related deaths have been among non-vaccinated people is an ‘American tragedy.’

“People are dying and will die who don’t have to die,” said Biden, encouraging citizens to get their vaccine and prevent to suffer from the disease.

Biden also reminded people that in those areas of the country where vaccination rates are high enough to include the majority of residents, people do not have to wear masks anymore. Masks remain mandatory inside federal buildings and in parts of the country where COVID cases are high, or vaccination rates are still too low.

The CDC recommends you wear a mask when you’re in public and indoors, like work in a grocery store. That’s true for both the vaccinated and the unvaccinated. Why? We’re still hearing that people are unable to get time off from their employer to get vaccinated. Well, this is unacceptable. Thanks to the American Rescue Plan, the federal government is fully reimbursing any small- or medium-sized business that provides workers with paid time off to get vaccinated.”

We all benefit if we can get more people vaccinated.”
