Desmond Tutu, an icon of South Africa’s anti-apartheid movement, has died, aged 90.

First working as an English teacher, Tutu was ordained as an Anglican priest at the age of 30.

In 1975, he was appointed as the first black dean of St. Mary’s Cathedral in Johannesburg.

He became Secretary-General of the South African Council of Churches the following year.
