Mohammad Nazir Habibi, a former interpreter for the British forces in Afghanistan, asked UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson for help after having his visa application denied, Kabul, Saturday.
According to Habibi, he worked with the British forces on several dangerous missions, translating from Dari into English and vice versa. Eventually, the Taliban found out he worked as a translator and he needed to escape as he feared persecution from the group who are inching closer to the capital.
Habibi then applied for one of the UK’s relocation scheme visas made available to Afghan staff and their families which helped around 2,200 of them resettle in the UK. Despite reportedly qualifying for the ex-gratia scheme and selling his belongings after being told to prepare for the flight, he received a rejection letter as he ‘did not meet the immigration rules.’
Dozens of former British military commanders have reportedly expressed concern as well regarding the hundreds of applications for the ex-gratia scheme that have been rejected recently, given the severity of the Taliban offensive. Interpreters who worked for foreign forces face persecution and uncertain fate in Afghanistan as the Taliban continue with the offensive.
